What does DRIVE BY mean or stand for ?

A Drive BY is a sort of informal reconnaissance mission used by cops and law enforcement officers to check out the activities of a house or building. Also used in stake outs by private investigators,this visual surveillance is done from the car as it slowly drives past the area that is being investigated.
